Ayumu Sasaki was in top form in Moto3 qualifying at Phillip Island and took pole position moments ago.

After Deniz Oncu moved up to third place, it was Collin Veijer’s turn to do so before the riders went to the garage to prepare their final attacks.

The Australian was overtaken by Sasaki, and several other riders showed good pace in these last minutes, including Muñoz, who regained the lead. Nepa and Moreira also surpassed Sasaki.

Nothing changed until the end, and Muñoz finished at the top, beating Nepa by 0.073s. Moreira was third, Sasaki fourth, and Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) fifth, ahead of Jaume Masiá (Leopard Racing/Honda), who is the championship leader. The Spaniard was delayed by a technical issue on his bike still in the first minutes.

On a cool Friday morning with some wind, after the first flying laps, the home rider Joel Kelso (CFMoto Racing PrüstelGP) was leading. He was overtaken by Diogo Moreira (MT Helmets-MSi/KTM), but he quickly regained the lead and held it for about seven minutes.

However, Jaume Masiá (Leopard Racing/Honda) spent most of the practice session at the top of the timesheets. He took the lead with just under 14 minutes left and remained there until the 28-minute mark. At that point, he was beaten by Ayumu Sasaki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP).

This shows a distressing situation the young rider is currently facing. A new law was implemented this year, mandating the Federation to update sports insurance policies, something they haven’t done since 1994. Tatay recalled: ‘They were the first to call me for a photo when I won the Red Bull Rookies Cup and when I became the junior world runner-up. But now, to abandon me in this manner hurts deeply. The Spaniard further elaborated on the issue: ‘I pay for three licenses every year – the Spanish, the Valencian, and the international. Only the international one has covered its part. All Spanish riders are racing with an insurance policy from 1994, and the Federation hasn’t updated it’.

After yesterday’s pole position, Diogo Moreira achieved his first career win in the Moto3 World Championship at the Indonesian GP in Mandalika this Sunday. The rider was always in the fight for the podium places, but he only took the lead to keep it for good in the last lap.

Veijer took the lead ahead of Furusato, while Yamanaka improved further to reach third place. Aji dropped to fourth but was still in a position to advance to Q2. However, when Fernández improved in the last three minutes to reach third place, Aji lost his spot in the top four.

Joshua Whatley (VisionTrack Racing Team/Honda) moved up to fourth in the final minute, displacing Yamanaka from Q2.
