Mattia Casadei positioned himself well to potentially become the MotoE world champion in the first race at Misano by clinching pole position in the San Marino GP qualifying.
In Q1, Jordi Torres was the fastest rider. The Openbank Aspar rider was one of the four riders leading the session, edging out Miquel Pons (LCR E-Team) by just 0.060s, who also qualified on his first flying lap. Eric Granado (LCR E-Team) finished third, missing out the Q2 by only four thousandths of a second.
Torres was the first to complete a flying lap in Q2 but was soon overtaken by Casadei. The Italian improved his lap time and held onto the lead until the end. His HP Pons Los40 teammate, Nicolas Spinelli, was the closest contender, trailing by 0.073s. Héctor Garzó (Dynavolt Intact GP) finished in third place.
As for the other title contenders, Torres will start from fifth, while Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini) will begin from tenth. The Italian was penalized due to a technical infraction but still couldn’t manage to secure a lap time to be in a higher position.
