David Alonso secured his second career win in the Moto3 World Championship on Sunday. The Colombian rider clinched the win at the Catalan GP in the final corner, in a truly dramatic finish marked by crashes and a penalty that affected three of the riders battling for top positions.

Deniz Öncü (Red Bull KTM Ajo) made a strong start, taking the lead, with Ivan Ortolá (Angeluss MTA Team/KTM) in second. Joel Kelso (CFMoto Racing PrüstelGP) initially held third place but was overtaken by Jaume Masiá (Leopard Racing/Honda) in the first lap.

The Spanish rider was in great form, moving up to second in the second lap by swapping positions with Ortolá. In the third lap, Masiá overtook Öncü at the end of the main straight to take the lead. Alonso (GasGas Aspar) also had a strong start and was third after four laps. One lap later, the Colombian rider was leading the race.

The front group was large, and position swaps were frequent. Öncü returned to the front but was overtaken by Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3) with 12 laps to go. Masiá was in third.

David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports/KTM), who started 20th on the grid, joined the battle for the podium. Öncü tried to break away at the front but was unsuccessful. He stayed in the lead for a while, but in the final laps, several riders took turns in the lead.

Everything was decided in the last corners. Muñoz took the lead in turn 10 but crashed on the last corner, allowing Alonso to win ahead of Masiá. Öncü finished third but was penalized with a double Long Lap, equivalent to six seconds, for irresponsible riding in the incident that took out Muñoz.

As a result, he dropped to 12th, and José Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was promoted to the podium. Ayumu Sasaki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) finished fourth, with Stefano Nepa (Angeluss MTA Team/KTM) in fifth. Holgado, the championship leader, also crashed on the final lap but still crossed the finish line in 22nd place.

Daniel Holgado led the first phase of qualifying for the Catalunya Moto3 Grand Prix, securing a spot in Q2 along with three other riders: Joel Kelson, Scott Ogden, and Taiyo Furusato.

After the initial outings, the qualifying positions were held by Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3), Diogo Moreira (MT Helmets MSi/KTM), David Salvador (CIP Green Power/KTM), and David Muñoz (BOE Motorsports/KTM).

KTM was dominating this initial phase of qualifying, but there were still many minutes left, and everything could change in the final attempts to secure qualifying positions.

Indeed, there was a shake-up in the standings. Holgado didn’t lose his lead, but Kelso (CFMotoRacing PrüstelGP), Furusato (Honda Team Asia), and Ogden (VisioNTrack Racing Team/Honda) moved up to second, third, and fourth, respectively. They were not overtaken until the end, securing their qualification. Moreira finished fifth, missing out by 0.206s.

Collin Veijer led the third and final practice session for the Catalunya Moto3 Grand Prix, held this morning in Barcelona. His time is the best of the weekend so far.

It was in the dying moments of the session that the Dutch rider from Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP secured the top spot with a lap completed in 1m48.003s. He overtook Stefano Nepa (Angeluss MTA Team/KTM), who was also later beaten by Jaume Masiá (Leopard Racing/Honda). The Spaniard finished 0.298s behind Veijer and briefly held the top position during the session as well.

Ayumu Sasaki (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP) was the rider who spent most time at the front, holding the first position for nearly half of the P3. However, he ended up in fifth place, also trailing rookie José Antonio Rueda (Red Bull KTM Ajo).

In the combined timesheets of the three practices, it’s worth noting that Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3), the championship leader, was relegated to Q1 with the 15th fastest time. He missed out on advancement by only 0.005s and didn’t improve from the P2 session.
